Leon Maitre dinner series - April 2008-04-14 13:56:21
Leon Auriol has agreed to do another installment of his acclaimed dinner series. Many of you are familiar with his 4 course French cuisine dinners and their popularity. The dinner includes wine and, at a total price of $35, it’s also one of the best dining out deals in town!

When: April 20th, 7:00 PM
Where: Salle Auriol Seattle

If you have never been able to experience one of these dinners because they were already full by the time you tried to sign up, this upcoming dinner is for you as Leon has asked that first choice be given to individuals who have not been able to attend before. Don’t delay, though, as these seats fill up fast and I will only hold seats open for the first two days!

Leon has increased the number of seats to 24 (up from 20) so I am sure there will be seats available to people who have already had the pleasure of attending. If you fall in this category, please email me and I will put you on a waiting list for the first two days, after that I will fill available seats.

Thanks and Bon Appetit!

These dinners are limited to 20 people and generally sell out quickly. Email marshall@salleauriol.com to reserve your spot(s)!

Adopt a fencer night 2008-01-28 13:54:06
Saberists,
The intermediate class is doing a very brief intro to saber. For tomorrow, Tue 1/29, we'd love to have a few saberists come help the class hook-up and get some real practice time. The class goes from 6:30pm-7:45pm and we'll turn them over to the volunteers sometime between 6:45 and 7pm.
As part of this, please bring any extra lames and body cords. The club gear has once again gone thin. We'll assemble as much club gear as possible. Please email me if you're interested in helping.
Thanks. -Martin

Saber Bi-Weekly Tournaments 2007-10-24 16:06:20
The Salle Auriol Saber Cup

In the interest of giving everyone more bout experience and provide more opportunity for a competitive atmosphere, we’re going to be starting up a biweekly tournament, on Thursday nights. The tournaments will be held each week, alternating between men and women's. USFA membership will not be required.

Tournaments will be formatted the same as a regular USFA tournament (pools with 5 touch bouts), followed by 15 touch direct elimination bouts, based on seeding.

SASC points will be awarded for both attendance and finish. At the end of the year, before Nationals, we’ll have a saber dinner and award the men’s and women’s cups, and yes, there will be actual cups.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Joe Meek at uberfleche@gmail.com

The scoring will go as follows: 1st Place- 10, 2nd- 8, 3rd- 6, 5th- 4, 6th- 3, 7th-3, and 8th- 1.

Current standing will be available on the Salle website. (www.salleauriol.com)

Announcing the Brawl in the Salle tournament series 2007-09-26 13:09:42
Announcing the Brawl in the Salle tournament series!

This is a monthly series of themed foil tournaments that occurs the first Wednesday of every month at 8pm, open only to Salle Auriol members (USFA membership NOT required). The goal of these tournaments is to organize our practice sessions a little more than usual and to bring together foilists of all levels in a fun and competitive format that will be rewarding for all levels. If you've been thinking of competing but haven't yet gotten up the nerve, this is an excellent way to start: it's free, and takes place during the normal Wednesday evening open fencing time! And remember, though the series is foil-focused, you certainly don't have to be a foilist to participate.

Preregistration on www.askfred.net is encouraged (to promote a smoothly running tournament) but not required.

Entrants will earn points tracked for the series on FRED so you can see how you measure up to your team mates. We'll conclude the season with a gathering in June at which prizes will be awarded.

Each event will have a theme designed to bring out something a little different from the norm, to put an added spark into our fencing to prod us into learning something new. Themes will range from different tournament formats, to emphasis on certain types of fencing actions, to tweaking certain rules to change the game slightly. Suggestions are always welcome!

The events are unrated and do not require a USFA membership, so all Salle Auriol fencers are encouraged to participate, even if you've never thought of competing before.

Cost: free!

The first event features rating handicap as its theme and is up on www.askfred.net, preregister now!

Questions or suggesionts? E-mail me, your Brawl Monitor: laren@salleauriol.com

Dues Payment Reminder 2007-08-13 10:40:14
Greetings Fencers:

This is a reminder to everyone that, even though many of you are taking the Summer months off to play in what Seattle sun we've seen so far, you still need to make payments and keep your account current. Monthly payments are due each month during the first week of that month whether you are fencing or not. This helps us keep the heat on in the Winter and the fans on in the Summer, and the lights on all year.

If you have a special consideration, such as an injury that is keeping you away from the club, please contact Catherine Slaton so she can go over options with you.

Catherine will be contacting each of you beginning this week to review your account if you are more than thirty days overdue. If you have questions regarding your account please contact her ahead of time at catherine@salleauriol.com. Also, please contact her with any questions or comments you may have about club membership.

Thanks ahead of time for helping us keep the club going and the wolves away from the door.

Best regards,

WWD Division News 2007-07-30 15:03:31

Western WA Division News
www.wwdfencing.org August, 2007

Hello fencers!

The start of the 2007-2008 fencing season is just around the corner. Before you know it, September will be here and we will be kicking things off with the annual Leon Auriol Open! It's already on AskFRED if you haven't noticed…

There are several news items that we'd like to share with the division membership before the new season starts. Some of these items involve new procedures around our tournament organization, so please read further for the details.

USFA Membership
USFA memberships expire on July 31 st, so if you haven't already renewed your membership, please consider doing so now in order to avoid the paperwork hassle at your first tournament.

You can download the membership form from http://www.wwdfencing.org/wwdDocs/Membership.pdf . You can also renew your membership online at the USFA website, but they charge you $5 extra.

Tournament Pre-Registration Changes
This year, we will be requiring that fencers pre-register for division tournaments on www.AskFRED.net . While most people do pre-register, each tournament has a number of people who just show up to fence. This makes it more difficult for us to accurately estimate how many referees we need, among other things.

This season, we will be requiring that people pre-register on AskFRED no later than the Wednesday before the event. If you do not pre-register online, the tournament entry fees will be doubled at the door. Pre-paying online will still be optional, and there won't be a penalty for pre-registering and then not showing up.

WWD Clinic Poll
The WWD is planning on hosting at least one fencing clinic next season, but we need your feedback to determine what people are most interested in. We have put together a quick poll to help us determine interest levels in the different possible clinics. Please visit the WWD website at www.wwdfencing.org and vote for what you want!

2007-2008 Season Calendar
We are in the process of setting up the calendar of WWD events for next season. We hope to have the calendar posted on the WWD website by the end of August.

The USFA has already posted the dates and locations of next season's national events on the USFA website.

WWD Email List
Last season there was a bit of confusion around the various email lists used for tournament announcements. Several clubs have their own email list, and the WWD also has an email list. It is important that all members join the WWD email list to stay informed of the latest division news because not all emails go to the club lists! To join the WWD email list, send an email to: wwdfencing-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

New Section Officers
If you haven't already heard, Marshall Hibnes has stepped down as Section Chair after serving the Pacific NW Section for many years. Serge Timacheff, the former Vice-Chair, was elected as the new Chair, and Rick Glover was elected as the new Vice-Chair. The Treasurer and Secretary remain Bob Marx and Lisa Marx of NWFC in Portland, respectively.

Please take a moment to thank Marshall for his years of work on behalf of the Section, and to wish Serge and Rick good luck in their new positions!

The 2007 Leon Auriol Open and 2008 Battle in Seattle
The dates and times for the Leon Auriol Open and the Battle in Seattle have been chosen and are already posted on AskFRED. Mark your calendars now and let everyone know they should come and fence at our signature events! Also, look for our ad in the September issue of American Fencing!
